The annual AWGA Representative meeting held at Moon
Valley Country Club on January 26th was a big success
despite the lack of cooperation from Mother Nature.
Over 100 women from all over the state came to learn,
share their experiences, and enjoy the camaraderie of
fellow representatives. The sun wasn’t shining
outside but it was certainly warm and cheerful inside.
Opening the meeting were Katherine Olson, President
of the Board, and Mary Long, Executive Director. They
gave an overview of the day and informed the attendees
about the line-up of presenters in our new format. Kathryn
Ridlehoover, Director of Communications, guided the
new representatives through the responsibilities of
their positions. With years of experience and some fresh
ideas for the coming year, Kathryn introduced excitement
and challenge to the newly-named AWGA Representative
position. She unveiled the most recent program, the
Area Reps, which was designed to support AWGA Reps in
their positions. Armed with notebooks containing information
to be successful reps, the ladies were ready to accept
their charge of being involved and approachable liaisons
between the AWGA and their women’s groups. Returning
representatives were guided by Mary Long and Norma Scuri,
Membership Chair, discussing the past year’s successes
and issues. Input from the representatives is invaluable
in helping the AWGA do its best in keeping communications
open for a mutually beneficial relationship. After the
meetings, the women attended break-out sessions designed
for both fun and learning. Presenters included Pam Barnett
and Kim Haddow, LPGA teaching pros; Barbara Kahler,
Executive Coach; Mindi Boysen, Golf Fitness Specialist;
Bryan Pierce from Magique Golf; and Chris Dorris, Sports
Psychologist. Everyone agreed that the classes added
a new dimension to the meeting and members were pleased
to have the opportunity to learn practical tips taught
by experts in their respective fields.
From getting reacquainted with old friends to meeting
newly elected representatives, women were connecting
because of one common interest – their love of
golf. Conversations about club activities, tough holes,
charity tournaments, job responsibilities and the pure
enjoyment of playing golf filled the room. Members drove
from places as far as Show Low, Flagstaff, Sierra Vista,
and Tucson to spend the day in an atmosphere of promoting
women’s golf in Arizona.
A special thanks to Kathryn Zatzke, Business Operations
Manager, for her attention to details that made this
meeting run smoothly. And for all of the AWGA Representatives
who were unable to attend this year, we’re looking
forward to seeing you next year. Your feedback is important
to us and we’re hoping to have you participate
in this dynamic gathering dedicated to promoting the
best interests and true spirit of golf among women in
Arizona!
